Required – Manager Formulation Development!

The Manager of Formulation Development is expected to independently manage the activities of a group of Formulation Scientists and Chemists and perform all related administrative functions for the group. Lead technical/scientific project activities applying expertise and experience in the development of appropriate execution strategies and technical solutions to meet client expectations. Lead or participate in technical discussions with client.

Engage in the management of clients, processes and equipment design for clinical, scale up and registration batches including tech transfer of projects to and from clients.

Lead the design and evaluation of formulations and manufacturing processes and support problem solving as necessary

Manage resources in the function to achieve project and team objectives and coach people in their work group in areas such as the drug development process and PDS systems.  Liaise with Project Management, Facility/Equipment Schedulers, Materials Management, Analytical Development and other functional areas to meet project and team objectives.  This role may be supported by local or global experts as necessary.

Essential Functions

Lead Client New Business and Project Activities: (75%)

  • Lead the design, evaluation, and development of formulations and manufacturing processes for soft-gel, semi-solid, or liquid dosage forms of new formulations and scale-up procedures of soft-gel, semi-solid, or liquid dosage forms at the pre-clinical, clinical, and post marketing stages of drug development.
  • Lead/participate in problem solving for formulations, equipment, and processes.
  • Write and ensure timely execution of protocols and development reports for feasibility work and manufacturing batch records and clinical trial materials in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practices and company standards.
  • Participate in relevant meetings/teleconferences with clients.
  • Develop realistic proposals and timelines.

Functional Activities: (25%)

  • Liaise with Project Management, Facility/Equipment Schedulers, Materials Management, Analytical Development and other functional areas to meet project and team objectives.
  • Coach people in the work group and communicate openly and with constructive feedback to fully develop potential. May be required to manage the recruitment and training of new team members.
  • Lead strategic initiatives and solutions for PDS and or PDS.  Suggest improvements to systems or processes and be involved in implementing them. Work closely with site management to optimize requirements of both client and site for portfolio of projects.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of pharmaceutical processes, equipment, instrumentation, and procedures necessary to perform the tasks.  Keep current with scientific literature and industry trends relating to process technologies and disseminate relevant information.  Key technical leadership role in Center of Excellence Initiative; look for opportunities for publication/external presentations.
Physical Requirements
  • Masters of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctorate (Ph.D.) preferred
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in drug development
  • Minimum 4 years of directly related supervisory experience.
  • Proven ability to coordinate activities and lead development activities
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the drug development process
  • Demonstrable organizational skills relevant to drug development
  • Proficiency with the English language; with excellent oral and written communication skills.  Able to clearly communicate face to face or by phone, including experience in managing technical discussions with internal and external (Client) meetings.
  • Superior presentation and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with internal resources and client representatives
  • Established quality, regulatory, and production mindset
  • A clear and positive appreciation for client service within the contract development environment
  • Works independently with minimal need for intervention by more senior staff
  • Ability to develop and communicate technical solutions that are mutually beneficial to the client and Patheon
  • Demonstrated success in the managing of multiple projects
