Title: Director of Pharmaceutical Discovery Toxicology, Discovery & Research Leader

The Director of Pharma Discovery Toxicology with a Discovery & Research Project Leader role will play a key role in the identification and research of

innovative novel pharmaceutical compounds that can be developed to meet Merial’s business needs, leveraging Market Requirements:

This position will help ensure that the Pharmaceutical Research strategy integrates DMPK and Toxicology components from early discovery through drug

candidate transition into the development pipeline.

Dotted-line technical reporting to the Head of Drug Safety & Disposition (DS&D) for:

• Non-D&R toxicology deliverables

• Alignment of strategy for drug candidate PoC to ensure seamless transition into development

• Access to a larger drug safety knowledge base for strategy and data review & vetting

Major Responsibilities:

Director of Pharmaceutical Discovery Toxicology:

• Accountable for design, execution and interpretation of toxicology and DMPK studies across all Pharma Research projects.

• Ability to identify and solve project safety problems by mitigating potential liabilities as early as possible from early screening through drug

candidate safety Proof of Concept (PoC).

• Primary Merial safety, toxicology and DMPK interface with internal and external partners for all Pharma Research projects.

• Devise & implement screening strategy for in silico, in vitro & in vivo eADMET lead optimization.

• Partners with internal and external medicinal chemists to incorporate appropriate eADMET data into Structure Activity Relationship for optimization

of the chemistry plan.

• Maintain an excellent network of CROs and negotiate when necessary best term to conduct exploratory & confirmatory toxicology studies.

• Delivers the design, execution, and interpretation of GSP and GLP safety PoC studies for drug candidates, specific to the needs of the product

target profile in consultation with appropriate internal technical resources.

• Accountable for the seamless transfer of toxicology and DMPK knowledge to the product development team.

• Remains up-to-date with relevant advances/trends in global scientific, industry, and regulatory thinking or state-of-the-art, and maintains

appropriate scientific training and certifications.

Discovery & Research Leader:

• Interfaces with Global Marketing and Commercial development to ensure clarity in Target Product Profile (TPP) safety requirements for Pharma

Research projects.

• Communicates Pharma Research project progress/risks to management and key global Merial stakeholders and partners.

• Accountable for effective management of a matrix of global resources and cross-functional expertise, both internal and external, to execute

strategic plans.

• Owner of the interface between Pharma Discovery & Research and key global Merial R&D partners ensuring clear and timely communication of

strategies, objectives, budgets, and plans for all global Pharma Research projects.

• Accountable for the seamless delivery of drug candidates into the Merial development pipeline.

• Accountable for managing Pharma Research project budgets and ensuring availability and effective use of sufficient resources to meet project needs.

• Responsible for publishing and presenting results as appropriate to meet Merial objectives.

• Represents Pharma Discovery & Research on product development teams as needed.



• PhD in Toxicology and/or Pharmacology with a minimum of 7-10 years relevant industry experience.

• Advanced knowledge of toxicology & DMPK with a good understanding of medicinal chemistry.

• Experience with regulatory safety requirements and risk assessment strategies in Animal Health.

• Experience managing project budgets and timelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Board certification in toxicology (DABT) preferred.

• Expert knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs)-GLP study director experience is a plus.

• Excellent knowledge of the drug discovery and research process.

• Ability to understand & interpret business strategy and market needs as they translate into requirements for new products.

• Excellent interpersonal, intercultural, communication and networking skills.

• Ability to understand, influence and motivate personnel in a matrix organization.

• Ability to effectively multi-task and work under pressure with multiple competing priorities.

• Fluency in English is mandatory and ability to communicate in another language such as French or German is beneficial but not mandatory
