Pharma News

Biotechnology major Biocon on Thursday said that it has acquired the manufacturing unit of Vizag-based Acacia Lifesciences for an undisclosed amount. Biocon said in a regulatory filing that it has acquired the business assets of the Vizag pharmaceutical manufacturing unit of Acacia Lifesciences with effect from October 1, on a going concern basis.“This unit is presently manufacturing advanced intermediates of potent active pharma ingredients (APIs) useful to the company’s business as well as for supply to third party customers,“ it added. The USFDA approved facility will help the Bangalorebased company in vertically integrating its oncology-related abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) filings in the future. Biocon said it sees synergies in API sales from the facility to third parties and the company’s ANDA business especially for oncology products. The facility , which is spread over 45,000 square feet, was commissioned in 2008 and currently APIs produced in the plant are sold both in the domestic as well as international markets. As per the Acacia website, the unit is located at JN Pharma City at Parawada and is spread over an area of 7 acres with the production area spread over two blocknd designated warehouse.

Biocon chairperson and MD Kiran Mazumdar Shaw had met AP CM N Chandrababu Naidu in December last year and had expressed interest in setting up a manufacturing facility in the city. Sources said Biocon has 50 acres in its possession in Atchutapuram mandal.
